This large-format book, consisting of lush drawings, clear photographs, and detailed, informative text, presents the tale of Mayan canoe traders returning to the city of Tikal after a month of business that took them all the way to Quiriguá. The story depicts the life of the ancient Maya, their history, and the development of Tikal itself. Mann does an especially good job of depicting the lives of both the nobility and the villagers of ancient times. Although there are several images of warfare, they are not too bloody for young readers.
