My six-year-old daughter and I enjoyed reading this special adoption story together. The Best Single Mom in the World is about a girl whose career-minded mom decides to become a parent and travels overseas to adopt her. Since it mirrors how our own family was created, the story is particularly meaningful to us. But it would be appropriate for any adopted child or any family interested in exploring the different ways families are created.
The charming and colorful illustrations would captivate most young readers as well as adults. The story is written in the young adoptee’s voice, using a child’s language.
My daughter especially liked sharing the reading parts—mother and daughter—which is easily done. She said the story reminded her of what it was like in China, waiting for her forever mom, getting picked up, and traveling a long way on the plane. This insight offered a comfortable entry to exploring our feelings about adoption.
