In 2015, parents in the United States adopted 5,647 children from 89 different countries. Intercountry adoptions to the U.S. have steadily declined since 22,884 children were adopted in 2004. The 2015 figure is 75 percent lower than that peak year, and 12 percent lower than the 6,438 international adoptions in 2014.
The top five sending countries in 2015 were China (2,354), Ethiopia (335), South Korea (318), Ukraine (303), and Uganda (202). Ninety-three children born in the U.S. were adopted by families from six other countries: Canada, the Netherlands, Ireland, Mexico, Switzerland, and Austria.
