Ask AF: Lobbying for Adoption Benefits

Considering lobbying for adoption benefits? Great idea! Our editors explain how to get started.

Q: I want to petition my company to instate adoption benefits — expense reimbursement, as well as paid leave. How should I approach this? What should I include in my proposal?

A: We applaud you for taking the initiative for adoption benefits! Put your request in writing — either an e-mail or a snail-mail letter.

Start by stating the average cost to adopt and the importance of bonding time with a newly adopted child. Say that adoption benefits are becoming mainstream, and that employee goodwill and loyalty will rise, despite a very low utilization rate.
