Ask AF: What's Typical in Adoption Agency Contact?

Wish your agency reached out more? Members of Adoptive Families Circle commiserate and offer advice on what level of contact is normal.

Q: Since signing with our agency a year ago and sending out almost 30 profile books, we hear from them only when we initiate contact. We haven’t been selected by a birth mother yet, but I’d like some sort of regular feedback. Is this normal?

A: Members of adoptivefamiliescircle.com respond:

“You need to advocate for yourself! We were matched through an agency, and I believe it was because we had a good relationship with them…either that, or they wanted my phone calls to stop…LOL.”

“We are working with an attorney, and have had a similar experience. Actually, I have had to be almost obnoxious to get in touch a few times when we had potential situations we found on our own.”

“Can you search for a birth mother on your own, as well as using the agency? We did, and I felt like I always had at least one iron in the fire.”

“This is why we left our local agency and went with a national agency. The new agency e-mails expectant mother profiles almost weekly, and I enjoy the communication, even if a situation is not for us.”
