RE: Empowering Children of Color Who Face Racism

This was a good read. I definitely need support and resources in navigating the transracial family waters, and I’m saving this, among other articles.

RE: “My Cardiologist Opened My Heart to Adoption”

Like the author, a medical condition ultimately led us to adoption. (In my case, it was hypothyroidism.) However, adoption was always in my heart. Now, with a beautiful daughter, I can honestly say it was the best experience of my life.

What led us to adoption? After losing an IVF pregnancy, we were talking and realized that pregnancy wasn’t as important to us as being parents. We took a year to consider and do couples therapy, then we adopted.

RE: Ask AF: Explaining to a Child That His Sibling Will Be Adopted By Another Family

There’s a book, Sam’s Sister, for just this occasion—to explain to a young child that a birth sibling will be adopted. It may be out of print, though.

Note from the AF editors: Sam’s Sister is a great children’s book about birth siblings. It actually did go out of print for a time, but was reissued last spring (different illustrations but the same spot text). Buy Sam’s Sister here.
